I couldn't recommend this experience any more highly. I took a group of 19 co-workers and friends on the Black River expedition, most of whom had never been rafting. None of us would win a fitness competition and the water levels were toward the high end, making many of them very nervous.
Our guide Mary navigated us safely down the river, ordering us through the rapids and entertaining us with stories during slow sections. For most of us (we were mostly late 20s to mid-30s) the high water level offered the perfect amount of excitement, although this wasn't true for everyone. One of the four boats flipped (twice). While they were safe, they were understandably shaken up by the power of the river. One of our party members got off after three rapids (which ARO uses as a test for exactly that reason).
My first experience, gave great safety training before starting out. Explained clearly what we would do and how to. Went on black river run. Guide talked about a lot of history of area on trip an naming of rapids. Felt exciting but safe too! BBQ was ok, nice touch.
Our guide was amazing. We went during very extreme conditions for the river (highest water level in 20+ years and the dam was offline, so all water was directed downstream) and some of the staff blatantly told us they had never seen such conditions before and were rather afraid to go out. But our guide was so adept, he made us feel completely safe and confident in his abilities and we didn't feel like we were in any danger at all. These guys really know what they're doing and are totally personable and professional.
Snacks were served in the middle of trip and after rafting excellent BBQ was served ... Must have (it's awesome)!!
Our guide was very experienced and he made us to have best fun out of this trip.
Awesome please, great service , Very scenic. We did rafting over white river(Hudson River) and it was full of rapids.
For our group, the cost of $63 plus tip seemed like a bargain when factoring in the expertise, equipment and the complimentary meal. We can't wait to go back.
While reservations are helpful, I'd also suggest calling ahead and asking about the water level in order to ensure the trip meets what you're hoping for.
Me and my wife had Matt as a guide. It was her first time and she and I both loved it. Matt was excellent and knew what he was doing. What a great day!
